Sleep. It is one of those absolutely essential conditions for overall health and anti-aging. Skin naturally regenerates by making new collagen when you sleep. Quite simply, better sleep equals better skin! But this vital process is often so easily disrupted….
When I suffered from insomnia a few years back while writing my senior thesis in college, my mother, Jenefer Palmer, founder of OSEA and a holistic healer suggested that I drink a glass of unsweetened Montmorency tart cherry juice 30 minutes before bed. Tart cherries are loaded with natural melatonin, a hormone made in the pineal gland that regulates sleep. Why buy synthetic melatonin, when you can drink it from the source? Tart cherries are also high in potassium which has been shown to promote sleep. Drinking cherry juice has really helped to regulate my sleep cycles. My current favorite is Uncle Harry’s.
My mother also shared with me the importance of nightly ayurvedic Abyhanga self-massage for beauty and sleep. Abyhanga massage calms the nervous system and promotes suppleness and luster of the skin. Before taking a bath, gently heat a bottle of body oil in a bucket of water so that it is warm, but not hot. We use OSEA Undaria Algae Oil, which is rich in minerals and antioxidants. Begin by placing a small amount of oil on scalp and gently massage your head. Next, delicately massage oil into face and the outer part of your ears. Continue down the body by massaging oil into neck, arms, hands and fingers, chest and abdomen, back and legs. Finish with the bottoms of the feet. Rinse in a warm bath. Spend 5-10 minutes on your Abyhanga practice. It’s such a great way to unwind before sleep!
As I still occasionally suffer from insomnia, I use OSEA Essential Hydrating Oil on my face before bed. Not only is it incredibly hydrating, but it also contains pure essential oils, including lavender which has a soothing, calming effect on the nervous system. I take my sleep VERY seriously, and always sleep on a bamboo pillowcase. Bamboo pillowcases are softer and more sustainable than cotton. They actually help prevent wrinkles by reducing the friction of your face against the pillow. As a bonus, bamboo has natural antibacterial properties, so they’re also perfect for acne-prone skin!
