A Conversation with Jenefer & Melissa Palmer

Did you know that OSEA is mother and daughter founded? To celebrate Mother’s Day and the magic of mother-daughter duos, we sat down with our founders, Jenefer and Melissa Palmer, to learn about their unique relationship, the lessons they’ve learned while building OSEA, their absolute favorite products and what they’re gifting this Mother’s Day.

Jenefer: “Working with my daughter all these years has been so fulfilling. Melissa has taught me that creative brains need business brains and they both bring a different perspective to the table. And they balance each other out. My creative brain has learned how to acknowledge and trust Melissa’s business brain because there’s built-in and inherent trust between mother and daughter.”

Melissa: “Through the years I’ve learned how to calm my angsty teenage inner-voice and see my mom for who she is: a creative visionary.”

Jenefer: “The best part of working with Melissa is having an excuse to call her 30 times a day! The only challenge is finding time to not talk about OSEA. We’re so obsessed and passionate about the brand we’ve built together.”

Melissa: “We’ve learned how to create boundaries so we can enjoy time off outside of work. We love long walks on the beach or swimming in the ocean.”

Jenefer: “As a family we’ve always prioritized our health and wellness. Our products are a big part of this! Collagen Dream Night Cream makes my skin look amazing every morning and it’s like an accidental surprise that it also works for under-eye circles. It’s such a bonus for this already fabulous product.”

Melissa: “Collagen Dream Night Cream always makes me think of my mom because she spent so many years working on it. But I have to say that our Hyaluronic Sea Serum is my desert island product! I take it everywhere I go.”

Jenefer: “This Mother’s Day I’m definitely gifting my daughter-in-law our Glow & Go Facial Set. She’s such a wonderful mother to my spirited 2-year-old granddaughter and she doesn’t really have time to go get a facial, so she can use this set to bring the spa home!”

Melissa: “I’m going to gift myself our Golden Glow Body Set. It has everything I need for a relaxing, moisturizing head-to-toe spa night at home! And it’s all of my favorites in one.”

Jenefer: “As a mother, grandmother and business owner, I’m going to celebrate Mother’s Day with a trip to Murrieta Hot Springs Resort for a relaxing and much-needed spa day. Fun fact: I conceived of the idea for OSEA while I was the Spa Director at Murrieta Hot Springs in the 80s, so it has a very special place in my heart. And the newly-opened and renovated resort also features OSEA facials!”

Melissa: “I’m going to surprise my mom with a picnic on the beach and then I’m going to make her famous best-ever homemade lentils for a nice family dinner.

Jenefer: “My advice to other mother and daughter teams is to communicate openly and honestly. Set clear roles for one another but also stay flexible. And never lose sight of the deep and unwavering love and respect that you have for each other.”

Melissa: “My mom and I really honor the transitions and milestones of this journey.

My advice is to take time to appreciate the highs and lows of building and growing a business. Get outside support if you need––we’ve even hired a business family therapist! And most importantly, have fun.”
